Alkestis Azakidi

Alkestis is an Interior Design graduate, deeply passionate about the expansive realms of design, from furniture creation to advanced  visualization techniques. After completing her studies, she moved to Berlin to pursue a career in interior design and to immerse herself in the city’s creative energy. During her time there, she experimented with furniture design, cultivating a strong interest in multi-functional pieces and developing an appreciation for studio furniture and space-age aesthetics.

She has attended specialized seminars and holds certifications in industry-standard software, including AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds Max, SketchUp, and V-Ray. Skilled in creating 3D models and photorealistic renderings, Alkestis brings ideas to life by giving form and depth to visionary concepts. She actively pursues further knowledge, researching market trends, analyzing the work of designers, and exploring art history and its trends as well.

In addition to her design work, she is interested in various forms of art, including playing music, sketching, photography and making collages, alongside a deep appreciation for philosophy, demonstrated through her research paper during her studies. She approaches each project with thoughtful consideration, merging both theoretical insight and practical application. Her main goal is to understand and meet human needs through holistic and innovative solutions. Her aesthetics are usually experimental and frequently bold, yet she values balance and a final sense of tranquility in the space, often inspired by elements of nature.

Born in Athens, Greece in 1996, currently based in Athens.

Research Paper

A pivotal point in her academic journey was marked by the culmination of her studies through the completion of her research paper ‘The Effect of Space on Human Perception.’ This research endeavors to explore how space influences human perception, striving to approach the objectivity of this complex subject.
The study takes an integrated approach, considering not only the design elements of a space but also delving into the underlying psychological and neurological processes that shape human reactions. Additionally, it adopts a philosophical perspective by examining the works of architects and theorists who approached the subject from a phenomenological standpoint. In conclusion, this investigation has delved into the impact of architecture on human perception and the ways in which design can address human needs through an understanding of neurology, psychology, and other sciences.

Thesis

The Exarcheia neighborhood in Athens is renowned for its rich history, cultural significance, and political importance. This multicultural area is known for its community solidarity and tradition of resistance against authoritarian regimes. A key feature of Exarcheia is its history of occupations, where abandoned buildings are repurposed by anarchist, autonomous, and anti-authoritarian movements as hubs for self-organization, education, social support, and cultural expression. However, many of these spaces have been shut down by police in recent years.

Gentrification threatens Exarcheia’s character, prompting local opposition. This thesis proposes repurposing an old occupation site, formerly a refuge for immigrants, into a cultural center that honors the neighborhood’s spirit. The center will feature art exhibitions using technology, with interactive installations and facilities like computers, 3D printers, projectors, and sound systems.

The project, titled “You are connected,” emphasizes the interconnectedness of people, technology, and information. It aims to create a space where individuals can connect, interact, and share ideas through art. The center will include exhibition spaces promoting education, culture, and creativity, a bar-café as a central gathering point, areas for discussion and opinion exchange, and classrooms and workstations equipped for special classes and creative activities. It will also include studios and apartments for artists, provided free in exchange for participation in artistic events, promoting multiculturalism and solidarity. Additionally, a swap library will allow users to freely exchange books.

This project seeks to preserve the alternative and experimental culture of Exarcheia while adapting to contemporary needs. It aims to ensure that the neighborhood retains its unique character, continuing to be a beacon of multiculturalism and solidarity amidst evolving urban landscapes.
